URBAN POOCH AUSTRALIA – TREAT TRAIN
The ultimate canine enrichment tool!
Alrighty pals! Are you ready for something TASTY and something FUN!
Climb aboard the UPA TREAT TRAIN and let the enrichment begin!
The Treat Train is a canine enrichment activity that has been designed on the bases of nose and scent work. We encourage you to use this foundation tool to bond with your dog by enriching their activity time, and working together to complete tasks.
The idea is to encourage your dog to use their nose to find treats hidden in the Treat Train. The Treat Train consists of a series of (14) pockets made from high quality cotton duck (canvas fabric). Don’t be afraid to experiment with different treats- the whole thing is machine washable!
To begin- it is a good idea to allow your dog to watch you hide the treats in the pockets. The pockets can be puckered up in order to make the game easier for beginners. On your command, allow your dog to search the pockets for the treats. You can start by hiding treats in every pocket, and once your dog grasps the idea, you can begin to randomise which pockets you hide the treats in!
You can also hide small toys in the pockets. This has two purposes- you can use a toy to help prop the pocket open for beginners. Alternatively- you can hide the treat underneath a toy in the pocket to make the game more difficult.
The treat train can also be rolled up so that the dog must first unroll it before they begin searching the pockets!
It’s advised to work closely with you dog, especially when they are learning, in order to avoid frustration caused by the task being too difficult or misunderstood.
The Treat Train works in a very similar way to the classic Snuffle Mat, however it is a little more challenging and can be manipulated to host a few variations of the activity. Ultimately- the Treat Train is designed to encourage your dog to use their nose and work their mind! It uses scent stimulation and draws on behaviours encouraging ‘search and find’, which is then self rewarded with a treat.
Remember to always set your dog up for SUCCESS and ensure training and games are always FUN and POSITIVE!
Never advance too fast. Ensure your dog is comfortable and confident with the task before making it more difficult. It’s important to use these opportunities to bond with your dog- the Treat Train is a CANINE ENRICHMENT tool, so should be just that- ENRICHING!
